Armeria maritima

Armeria maritima, known colloquially as sea thrift is a species of flowering plant in the Plumbaginaceae family. Armeria has a circumpolar distribution and is found wild in the coastal areas of the Northern Hemisphere. Growing in dry, sandy, saline conditions like coastal cliffs, grassland and salt marshes. Its compact nature as a mounding evergreen perennial makes it a popular garden flower, doing well in gardens designed as xeriscapes (landscapes that reduce or eliminate the need for irrigation) or rock gardens. The etymology is quite apparent, maritima being the Latin epithet suggesting a connection to the sea or coastal areas. And one specific cultivar, 'Vindictive', gained the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Below is a drawing I did on the plant for a module assessment illustrated planting portfolio, and one of my own photographs taken at Slapton Sands in Devon in May of 2022.
