Fourground
These pieces of work are part of our 3rd formative design project. Focusing on the concept of Fourground, and again looking at site-related elements linking to observation and recording. We were tasked with photographing 5 different objects that showed signs of wear, determination, corrosion, or physical damage. Specifically looking for any patterns and textures on the related surfaces. We were also to take rubbings from another 5 surface textures, I opted for graphite as my rubbing medium. And lastly, we were to collect a minimum of 5 found objects with a variety of shapes and characteristics.
Once these 15 or so pieces were collated, we were further prompted to present these objects in a way that shows a narrative using the concept of juxtaposition to create emphasis.
My narrative centred around the embedded time and story each found object holds, and aimed to demonstrate how we can extrapolate and infer the recent history of our surroundings through observation. The eggshell shows the story of a bird at the precipice of its life, the cracks in the shell scream growth, birth and new. However, when you look at those very similar cracks in the paint, you see the story of age and deterioration.
When arranging my pieces, my composition was intended to use the effects of back and foreground to show depth and detention in the differing representational media. By overlapping pieces, I tried to create a more flowing and harmonious collection of works that had legable interrelated connections. Positioning the objects with the backgrounds they best fit with, and arranging the photographs to complement and balance the overall piece
