Moving and Viewing - Distance, Time, Space and Memory - Project 4 - 3 Week design concept brief for Royal Wells Bus Station

The above sketches are freehands from my design journal, looking at the Royal Wells site and my initial ideas for the bus shelters. I find the current materiality quite drab, and not an accurate reflection of the wealth of history and culture Cheltenham represents. My concept primarily comes from the bespoke wrought ironwork found on the surrounding regency buildings, particularly the crescent terrace houses behind the bus station, coupled with the nesting birds I saw on site in the central London plane trees. As the emblem of Cheltenham is a pigeon I thought it fitting to bring these elements to create something unique to the Towns identity. Besides the bus stops, my concept also involves a community-led mural on the back of the Burrough Council building to distract from the current facade.
