Celtic Heritage - Cotswolds
Because of the surrounding site context, my research has been directed towards the historical context of the Cotswolds area. Looking at Celtic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Neolithic and Roman influences on the landscape. Archaeologic evidence reveals that the Cotswolds were heavily wooded during the Neolithic period, which I intend to pay homage to in my planting and green infrastructure. Cheltenham is surrounded by a significant wealth of heritage sites, like Belas Knapp Long Barrow and the Crickly Hill neolithic settlement and hillfort. The drawings feature Dobunni coin motifs and stone circles. The Dobunni were an Iron Age tribe that occupied the Cotswolds region. Bordered by the Catuvellauni and Atrebates, the tribe had a separate coinage from the romanticised Atrebatean coins that they produced themselves. Trees and horses are the main features of the coinage and two of the identities I want to bring to the site. Linking to Cheltenham's history and prevalence as a race town, and aiming to recapture the forested history of Britain in an enhanced wooded area. Conceptually I am interested in the textural forms and shapes of the coins, and how that might transcribe to a landform or architectural design.
