Alphabet Series - M
I saw M in the gables of the houses part of the new Sherford development near Plymouth. Sherford is a new town under construction in Devon. Part of the land for development lies within Plymouth and the rest within South Hams. Development on the site was planned to start in 2007, and the first 300 dwellings were to be built in 2009. However, only in August 2015 did the construction of the new town start for the first 700 homes after South Hams Council accepted a new planning application in December 2011 with formal planning permission granted in November 2013. The new town overall is expected to create around 7000 new jobs, and the development will reportedly provide 35 hectares of publicly accessible green space and communal areas, including the Sherford Stream Valley, urban parks, playgrounds, wildflower meadows, avenues of trees, and parkland which will eventually span 500 acres.
When completed, it is expected to have 5,500 dwellings, built over 20 years. Over 1000 of the houses will be "low cost" due to the high discrepancy between house prices and wages in the area. When complete, it is estimated to be home to around 12,000 people and will include three primary schools, a secondary school, as well as a health centre, retail facilities, a library and a town hall. The town planning aims to use traditional urbanisation to make the town carbon-neutral through the construction of energy-efficient buildings and a pedestrian-centric design layout. The aim is that shops, schools and businesses will be within walking distance of residents' homes. The project is partly funded by a £32 million repayable government loan.
