Alphabet Series - N
Found in the rocks on Aymer Cove. N is drawn in the quartz veins in the slate. Quartz is a mineral formed from silica, while slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock, transformed under heat or pressure from sedimentary rock (clay or volcanic ash). Quartz bands, or veins, are formed as water seeps through the slate, which results in crystal growth on the walls of the planar fractures. A crack-shaped cavity opens in the main rock, which is then filled by the precipitation of quartz from dissolved silica. These veins have attributing characteristics that reflect the water that was present in the pores and cracks of the rock at depth.
