Lotus on Water - Marina Bay Sands - Singapore

This past summer I was able to spend a week in Singapore, giving rise to a large collection of precedent studies for future landscape projects. One of the first I visited was the Marina Bay sands area in central Singapore. Lotus on Water is situated underneath and around the ArtScience Museum, a building shaped to mimic an open lotus flower. The reflecting pond is filled with collected rainwater harvested and channelled from the bowl-shaped roof through the centre of the building. Due to the scale of the pond, the visual impact is striking. Reflecting the building above and creating a scene mirror for the sky and further urban skyline. The carpeting nature of the purple lotus is quite breathtaking and overall, while a simple concept, the effect is quite sublime. Truly showing the power of water in urban areas and how mass planting of one species can be just as visually stimulating and aesthetically effective as a complex scheme.
