Sedum Green Roof - Fowey
I have mixed opinions about manufactured green roofs, however, this example is one the most effective I've seen. Using a carpet of sedum anglicum the roof covered a private garage in Fowey, Cornwall. Which as a seaside town, is built into a hillside. Sedum anglicum is a creeping, succulent, evergreen perennial. It creates a dense mat up to 5cm tall and has fleshy oval greyish-green leaves that alternate up the stems. The leaves take on reddish tinges as the season progresses, and flowers with 5 pointed white petaled flowers that are tinged with pink are 11-12mm. Its uses in 'green housing' are many. Providing insulation when allowed or actively encouraged to grow roof for both heat, cold and sound. It is Native to the UK and drought and salt-tolerant and incredibly hardy making it well-suited to the requirements of successful low-maintenance green roofs, while also providing aesthetic values.
