Grassblock paving - SuDS compliant car park
As part of this semester's Sustainable Technology Module, my design for the Folly new development carpark involves a geometric, decorative and in-planted grass block pathway and parking bays. Loosely inspired by the works of Piet Mondrian, Cornelis van Eesteren, Theo van Doesburg, and the De Stijl art movement in regard to the surrounding primary tertiary planting colours and formal blocking.
The modular blocks used are predominantly the Hydro Lineo precast concrete modular pavers, in theStandard White 051 colour. Using Stradus projects as precedents, notably; Sint-Agathaplein Wilsele, VZW De Korf Kortrijk and Centrumstraten Overijse. I am predominantly looking at Dutch projects, products and design styles for this project as the Netherlands is a major hub in terms of innovative approaches to drainage, and I am actively trying to improve my Dutch landscape-specific technical vocabulary.
Included in the post are my draft paving layouts for the folly, the first being the connecting path, and the latter the layout for the standard car bays. These blocks have space for soil and turfing, and the Hydro Lineo XL line itself includes three different models of concrete pavers that work conjunctively as they all have a uniform nominal outer size. The width of the widened joint is the only variation per model, and the increasing width of the widened joint allows for a smooth transition from a closed to an open pavement, and back again.
