Sketching - Saddle Tor
Below is the sketch of Saddle Tor, the rock form this week's letter J is from. As previously mentioned the tor is granite and located on Dartmoor, an upland area in southern Devon, in the South West of England. The moorland and surrounding area have been protected by National Park status since 1951. The National Park covers 954 km2. Dartmoor is also part of the South Devon AONB and is therefore a protected landscape in Britain. It is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority.
The granite which forms the uplands, like Saddle Tor, dates from the Carboniferous Period, and the overall landscape consists of moorland capped with exposed granite hilltops, called the tors. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeological artefacts.
