The Jewel Changi Airport Singapore
An avoidable attraction when visiting Singapore is of course the airport. The Rain Vortex at the Jewel has been on my bucket list for so many years, actually seeing it in person was quite surreal. I am glad to have visited after formally studying this course as it allowed me to appreciate the details far more than I would have a couple years ago. The world's tallest indoor waterfall, the 40m cascade is surrounded by terraced jungle-themed seating bays and balconies. The water used in the feature is recirculated rainwater that is pumped to the room before free falling through the round whole. Around 37,850 litres of water goes through the system a minute, accumulating in a basement-level pool.
What I love most about the indoor forest chamber is its synthesis of hard and soft materials. The curved toroidal glass and steel facade blends smoothly with the tiers of trees and shrubs, combining mathematical curved geometry with natural undulations. The roof is made up of more than 9,000 pieces of glass, spanning a total of 200x150m. The lead Landscape Architects on the project were PWP Landscape Architecture, who also worked on Marina Bay Sands and the National 9/11 Memorial in NYC.
Named the Shiseido Forest Valley, the landscape surrounding the Rain Vortex is one of Asia's largest indoor gardens, comprising five stories and approximately 22,000m2. It contains around 3,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs of 120 different species all from high-altitude tropical forests around the world.
